"Their history spoke of a great war – a war where their ancestors, the ancestors of the hidden cities, had left their lands, and created their cities hidden deep inside the desolation. A place where no one could live, let alone a tribe or clan. Their history spoke of a great war bringing the survivors outside the desolation back to a primitive state and what could be seen of these same primitives today. The primitives continued to fight among themselves, with skirmishes between the clans and tribes, with no apparent knowledge of their true advanced past.
And because of the harsh lands where the cities dwelt they felt safe with their advances, their illusions. And with the primitives occupied with each other, the cities, even with their isolation not only from the primitives, but each other, knew they’d remain untouched, unknown, and undiscovered. Yet . . . yet something has changed and suddenly cities have gone dark – silent. No warning, no sense of impending doom or disaster. Is it a natural catastrophe that has swallowed them up? Or is it something more...?"

Sentient viruses ended the world as they knew it, and now the survivors, as well as people who never knew a different world, are trying to rebuild. Some were travelers who are now unable to return to their countries, and are trying to build a life where they landed when the shit hit the fan. Our main character is an American policeman in England, trying to solve some mysteries both large and small, while everyone tries to get on with the task of surviving another day.

"A post-apocalyptic thriller set in a world of rationing and ruins, where a democracy struggles not to become a dystopia."

I'm sure most of you have seen this one mentioned here and there - it's been a huge hit in our PA circle, so we're giving it a shot for the club discussion next month. Bonus - the movie comes out the end of the month!

"Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her 'our little genius.'

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant Parks keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh.

Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn't know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.
