Good day fellow apoca-readers!

I must admit, it's not the easiest task in the world to sit down and assemble a newsletter when the weather outside is dazzling... around here it's Gardening Season! (That's even better than Cookie Season, in my opinion. Barely. But ask me again in December when I have tell-tale sugar cookie crumbs on my face.)

However for many of us, it doesn't matter whether it is summer or winter... we read no matter the weather! Our book club has been doing well this year, and voting for the remaining book selections will remain open for the remainder of 2017. Our next book is the "new classic" The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Details below.

See you around the group!

The Apocalypse Whenever book club: voting open all year
NEXTThe Road by Cormac McCarthy

Here's another "Finally!" book club reading. It's a short book, so I would recommend waiting until late in June to begin reading it, since you'll probably get through this one quickly.

"A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.."

NOW: The Last One by Alexandra Oliva

"She wanted an adventure. She never imagined it would go this far.

It begins with a reality TV show. Twelve contestants are sent into the woods to face challenges that will test the limits of their endurance. While they are out there, something terrible happens—but how widespread is the destruction, and has it occurred naturally or is it human-made? Cut off from society, the contestants know nothing of it. When one of them—a young woman the show’s producers call Zoo—stumbles across the devastation, she can imagine only that it is part of the game.

Alone and disoriented, Zoo is heavy with doubt regarding the life—and husband—she left behind, but she refuses to quit. Staggering countless miles across unfamiliar territory, Zoo must summon all her survival skills—and learn new ones as she goes.

But as her emotional and physical reserves dwindle, she grasps that the real world might have been altered in terrifying ways—and her ability to parse the charade will be either her triumph or her undoing."
