Greetings AWers!

It's a busy time of year for those of us who are enjoying the warmer months, but there's always time for reading, right? They didn't invent the term "beach book" for nothing! There are also a good number of movies coming out, some of which are post-apocalyptic or dystopian. More details below.

In the group, we've got all the usual activities (I almost said "the usual suspects" but I wouldn't want to cast aspersions on anyone's character :-P). We've just wrapped up another Bossy Book Challenge, and will likely be doing another one in a few months. We're also doing a giveaway of a t-shirt, so a few things to check out below!

-That's all she wrote.-

I hope you enjoyed the newsletter — if you have any questions or notice any errors, just send me a message!

Apocalyptically yours,

Gertie

"A collection of genre-bending stories inspired by Japanese folklore and pop-culture. Demons with marital problems, orientations for ghosts, and a dance party in Post-Apocalyptic Tokyo populate these pages. Every story turns to the fantastic, the mysticism of the past, and the absurdities of the future to illuminate the spaces we occupy."

If you haven't heard of Alas, Babylon, you've got some catching up to do. Considered a post-apocalyptic classic by many, it was written in 1959, and curiously enough, features a character named Randall Bragg. Hmm. It's only 323 pages and probably at your library (unless your library is Aunt Phoebe's closet full of Harlequin Romance books).

"'Alas, Babylon.' Those fateful words heralded the end. When a nuclear holocaust ravages the United States, a thousand years of civilization are stripped away overnight, and tens of millions of people are killed instantly. But for one small town in Florida, miraculously spared, the struggle is just beginning, as men and women of all backgrounds join together to confront the darkness."

The Apocalypse Whenever book club
NEXT: August book discussion: Serious Crimes by Frank Tayell
Free on Amazon.

"They called them Artificial Intelligences. Sentient viruses were closer to the truth. They spread throughout the world until every networked circuit was infected. Then they went to war. Millions died in the nuclear holocaust that brought an abrupt end to the AI’s brief reign of terror. Billions more succumbed to radiation, starvation, and disease. But millions survived, and they rebuilt.

Twenty years later, a ceremony is being held to mark the first transatlantic broadcast since The Blackout. The Prime Minister of Britain and two of the Presidents of the United States will speak to an audience of nearly ten million people. Not all are celebrating. Crime is on the rise, and power is once again a prize worth murdering for.

Ruth Deering, a new graduate from the police academy, doesn’t care about ancient history or current affairs. She only joined the force to escape the smog-infested city. Those hopes are dashed when she is assigned to the Serious Crimes Unit, commanded by the disgraced Sergeant Mitchell. Her first case seems like a simple murder, but the investigation uncovers a counterfeiting ring and a conspiracy that threatens to destroy their fragile democracy.

A post-apocalyptic thriller set in a world of rationing and ruins, where a democracy struggles not to become a dystopia.

Just finished: June book discussion: Soledad by D.L. Young

If you happen to win a book in the giveaway for this (ending in a couple of days) feel free to swing by the discussion to let us know if you liked it.

We got a pretty good number of votes for this one, however only one of the eleven people who voted for it bothered to return to actually discuss the book (thanks Greg!), and literally 3 people read and discussed it. Even the person who nominated it didn't read it, lol. However, as much as this is not a good thing, the book was pretty good so I certainly don't want to steer you away from it. It has simply made some flaws in our selection system apparent, so you can expect to see some changes in the future regarding the way we determine which books will be selected for monthly book reads.

I have to say, looking at these book club selections, the Alas, Babylon cover looks a bit ugly compared to the other two!

I will admit it, I LOVE going to the movies, every weekend if there is anything worth watching! Everyone needs a vice, right? Plus, that popcorn is really good.

Well, we've got plenty of (potentially) decent movies coming out in the next few months! Heck, if they aren't good, they may satisfy your PA and dystopian movie cravings anyway.
